SMMT: Scrappage scheme was a success
Monday, March 29, 2010 11:06As the government’s car scrappage scheme draws to a close, one organisation has reflected on its various successes.
Jonathan Visscher, media manager for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), said the scheme helped the industry through an otherwise difficult year.
He noted that throughout the course of 2009, scrappage accounted for around 20 per cent of all cars sold, showing the sheer popularity of the scheme.
"The market actually lifted by almost 30 per cent over that period. Perhaps the increased publicity helped people come into the marketplace," Mr Visscher added.
Now the scheme is over, he anticipates that sales will decline by around ten per cent.
Datamonitor recently predicted that new car sales across Europe will decline by about seven per cent this year, spurred on by a steep fall in the larger Western European markets where scrappage schemes are coming to an end.

I see some manufacturers are looking to bring in “swappage” schemes once the goverments purse runs out. Hopefully this will maintain the momentum in the new car market. And whilst we’re on the topic of Scrappage, I notice that scrap metal prices are increasing!!

Can any type of metal be recycled? I mean, I am confident that they can be somehow, but will recycling centers actually pay you for any sort of metal? Even steel? I have a daunting amount of stuff in my backyard that I would totally be willing to haul down to the nearest recycling facility if I was sure they would give me money for it.
